What Types of Visual Valve Indicators are Available?

Moniteur’s Visual Indicators

Visual indicators primary function is to provide local visual indication to plant and operation personnel. This indication allows for determining quickly the status of a valve’s position or a quick confirmation of its position.

Styles of Indicator Mounting

The visual indicators are available in three styles that depend upon the installation and application.

  • Indicateur VPT – Rugged indicator that is self contained and has a foot-print for mounting directly to a bracket. This style is used for larger actuators and for applications that only need a visual indicator on the actuator. This unit is environmentally sealed and is available with either a bronze or stainless steel bearing.
  • Indicateur Direct VPT – Indicator that is also environmentally sealed however an integral mounting bracket is included in the design. The Indicateur VPT will mount directly to the NAMUR mounting standard for 80mm x 30mm patterns. The standard unit mounts to a 20mm actuator stem height and there are optional spacers to mount to the 30mm height also.
  • Visual Indicator  – that is integral to a limit switch or valve position indicator.

Styles of Indicators

Moniteur offers a wide range of visual valve position indicator options that are available in a variety of colors, valve flow pictorials or a percentage of open/closed flow of the valve. Each of the indicator types provide additional information about the type of valve. Colors are often used to denote plant standards for open/closed or materials processed through the valve.

Indicator Applications

  • On-Off Valves – Moniteur’s standard color pattern is black/yellow for standard quarter-turn actuators (on-off valves that rotate 90 degrees). Other colors are available to meet plant specifications and other valve specifics requirements. Black/Yellow has become a preferred “standard” on account of the fact that approximately 15% of men are color blind and the colors and the patterns they create are helpful in these situations. There are however many plants that have standardized on the red/green color pattern to denote valve position.
  • Three way valves with 90 degree of rotation – Moniteur offers visual indicators for the 3-way valve flow paths. The pattern code used is either F, O, S, and T patterns. The indicators are flexible and they can be adjusted to show either visual flow as the valve indication start position.
  • Three way 180 degree valves and those with unique flow patterns – Moniteur offers the widest variety of visual valve indicators available. If the flow is possible we either have the indicator already available or we can engineer another unique flow pattern.
